Meet the Philippines 2010 Presidential Candidates
88Barely two months to go before the Philippines 2010 elections…
And you can already feel the heat, urgency and ‘desperation’ rising. National candidates (from President, Vice – President to Senators) are going to various places in the country to campaign for their respective positions. Posters, flyers, TV ads, radio ads – all these (and more) are now seen and heard on a daily or, even, hourly basis by the prospective voters.
This year’s national elections brought to light a new form of campaign platform – the Internet. Before, the only times you will see your candidate is if you pass by the streets and see their posters, watch the TV and see their TV ads and listen to the radio for their radio ads. Nowadays, you can go to the Internet and see their various social networking sites (Friendster, Facebook and even Twitter). There are even Adsense Ads that you can click on!
This hub, however, is not about the Philippines 2010 presidential candidates in the Internet. It’s not even about how the Internet is changing our election campaigns. This hub aims to ‘introduce’ each and every candidate for the president of the Philippines in 2010 and to provide a short description of each of them. This hub is by no means recommending any particular candidate or political party and should not be taken as such.
1. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III
Born on Feb. 8, 1960, Noynoy Aquino is the only son of the late former senator (and martyr) Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino, Jr. and the 11th and first lady president of the Philippines, Mrs. Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino. Both of his parents had played crucial roles in ending the 20 – year long martial law and dictatorship of the then – President Marcos. Now, Noynoy Aquino is following in the footsteps of his parents. In 1998, he was elected as a congressman of Tarlac, a position he held for nine straight years. In 2007, he was elected for Senator, placing 6th in the national elections.
Noynoy is the standard – bearer of the Liberal Party. His running mate is Mar Roxas, another member of a political family in the country (Roxas’ grandfather was the late former president, Manuel Roxas, while his father was a senator). Noynoy Aquino’s battlecry is “Kung Walang Corrupt, Walang Mahirap” (If there’s no corruption, there’s no poverty) and has vowed to eradicate corruption in the country.
2. John Carlos ‘JC’ De Los Reyes
Born on Feb. 14, 1970, JC is the youngest presidential candidate (he’s only 40 years old!). He is running under Ang Kapatiran Party (The Brotherhood Party). A lawyer by profession, he is a councilor of OlongapoCity. He spearheaded a free legal assistance program (called Justice Crusade), a successful program among his constituents. He has campaigned against various misdeeds such as illegal drugs, workers’ rights violations and illegal fish cages. He showed his boldness and radicalism through his filings of several complaints before the Ombudsman against several high ranking officials.
JC Reyes’ running mate is another lawyer, Atty. Dominador ‘Jun’ Chipeco. If elected, his vision is to fight and defeat poverty.
3. Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada
The 13th president of the country, who was unseated from power after less than 3 years in the presidency, Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada is back with a vengeance, this time running (again) for the highest position in the land. Erap is a known Filipino actor (an action star, no less) but he also has a long history as a political figure in the country. He was elected as mayor of San Juan City and held the position for 16 years. During these years, San Juan became a progressive city, a development largely attributed to Erap’s leadership. In 1987, he became a senator; in 1992, a vice – president and, finally in 1998, a president.
In 2001, he stepped down as president of the country during the People Power II. He was subsequently imprisoned and charged with graft and corruption. He was convicted for these charges but was later on pardoned by the current president of the country. Erap’s running mate is the current mayor of Makati City (the business capital of the country), Jejomar Binay. His political party is called Partido ng Masang Pilipino (Party of the Filipino Masses). His motto is ‘Erap para sa Mahirap’ (Erap for the masses).
4. Richard ‘Dick’ Gordon
A candidate with a vast political experience under his belt. Dick Gordon was credited as the one who successfully converted the former US military base in Subic Bay, Olongapo into one of the country’s primary free trade zone and established the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to oversee the running of this free trade zone. The conversion into a free trade zone resulted into several major foreign investors setting up their respective offices in Subic (to name a few, FedEx, Shell, Unioil and Acer Computers). In 2001, he became the Secretary of the Department of Tourism and launched the widely - successful ‘Wow Philippines!’ campaign aimed at increasing the number of tourists visiting the country. In 2004, he was elected as a senator of the country.
Other than the political arena, Dick Gordon is also an active member of the Philippine National Red Cross or PNRC. In fact, he is the chairman of this organization and had actively led the PNRC to several rescue, relief and rehabilitation missions. In time of natural calamities, Dick Gordon and the PNRC people are always there to provide relief to the Filipino people.
Dick’s running mate is Bayani Fernando, a former government official. His political party is Bagumbayan: Volunteers for a New Philippines.

5. Jamby Madrigal
The only female presidential candidate for the 2010 elections, Jamby Madrigal is currently serving her first term as a senator of the Philippines. Born on April 26, 1958, she comes from a family of public servants. Her grandfather is the former Supreme Court Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos while her granduncle, Pedro Abad Santos, was the founder of the Socialist Party of the Philippines. This lady senator is known for her outspokenness and her single-mindedness in pursuing issues which she thinks warrant the Senate’s and the people’s attention. Her political party is called Genuine Opposition and her battlecry is “Bayan Natin, Bago Lahat” (Our country first, above everything else).
6. Nicanor “Nicky” Perlas
Running as an Independent, Nicky Perlas was almost disqualified from the presidential race. This is the first time he is venturing into the political world but from reading his profile, this is not the first time that he has involved himself in national political policies. He was credited with influencing the turn of the 1996 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation or APEC by convincing the then President Ramos to convince the rest of the delegates to introduce sustainable development as APEC’s third paradigm. This move basically spared the rice farmers of the country from the liberalization moves that were proposed by several APEC member – countries. He is called the “Global Consultant on Integral Sustainable Development”. His vision for 2016 (the year of the next national elections) is the “Muling Pagsilang ng Ating Bayan” (the rebirth of our country).
7. Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro, Jr.
The standard – bearer of the current president’s political party, Gibo Teodoro is also a 2nd cousin of another presidential candidate, Noynoy Aquino. At only 46 years old, he is the youngest to have ever held the position of Secretary of Defense in 2007. Prior to his appointment as a secretary, he was a congressman for nine consecutive years in Tarlac.
Academic – wise, Gibo has probably one of the best credentials among the roster of candidates. He is a Philippine Bar topnotcher (the Philippine Bar exams are for those who want to become lawyers). He also passed the New York State Bar examinations in 1997. He completed his masters degree at the Harvard Law School in Massachusetts.
Gibo’s running mate is actor Edu Manzano. His motto is “Sipag at Talino” (Perseverance and Intelligence).
8. Eddie Villanueva
This is the second time that Eddie Villanueva is running for the presidency. Although he is a virtual newcomer in the political arena, Brother Eddie Villanueva has been a known figure in the country. He is responsible for setting up and for leading the Jesus is Lord Worldwide Movement, a Christian organization known for its millions of followers all over the country.
His running mate is Perfecto Yasay, Jr., the former head of the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission. His battlecry is “May Pag-Asa Pa!” (There’s still hope!).
9. Manual ‘Manny’ Villar
Last but not the least, this candidate is the richest among all the current presidential candidates. Senator Manny Villar is a self – made billionaire and has been consistently recognized as the richest senator of the land. Manny Villar gives credence to the saying “from rags to riches”. He rose from his humble beginnings, graduated as an accountant (and later on became a Certified Public Accountant) and was responsible for establishing the largest homebuilding company in the country. He had successfully taken several of his companies public through the local stock exchange, enabling him to rise in status from a poor man, to a rich man and finally, to a billionaire. His richness and his political stature, however, seem to come with a price as his detractors are now hurling charges at him that he took advantage of his political position to benefit his companies and to make himself richer.
Manny Villar entered the political world in 1992 as a congressman; he served for nine years and became the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He became a senator in 2001 and in 2006, was elected as the Senate President. He holds the distinction as the only one who has held both the Speaker of the House and Senate President positions.
Manny Villar’s running mate is another senator, Loren Legarda, who is in her second bid for the vice – presidency position. His political party is the Nacionalista Party. His vision is to help and inspire other Filipinos to become successful through hard work and determination (Sipag at Tiyaga).

Like I said in the forums that finally we will see another hub from Emievil and here it is and that too on my favorite topic. Do you have any idea Emie how obsessed I am with politics. lol
Who's your favorite out of these?
An iformative and well written hub and I hope you will be getting a good President. All my best wishes for your country.
Thanks for this hub Emie, very timely and relevant (as Cris said)!
its timely and very relevant.kudos
Ems, my votes will be based on the most creative political ads. Sorry for those who did not invest:D
My top choices are Noynoy and Gibo. Whoever wins this coming election, I hope they will make a new beginning and good changes to our country. Thanks for this hub
Thanks for sharing this info. Unfortunately, Im away from Pinas and I was not able to register, so I cant really express my suffrage. A former boss is one of the candidates but personally I will not endorse him to my family and friends. Im going home in April and somehow I could do a little bit of persuasion with my close relatives/friends to choose the candidates to be written in the ballots. I recently watched the controversial conflict between Ruffa and Kris Aquino thru the Buzz program, and I was touched by Kris statements. I do believe that she is sincere about her feelings and I do hope that the people will not be persuaded by any allegations against her as the sister of Noynoy.
emie, you did a great hub about Presidentiables, I am so glad you write about them. and the Internet is a new form of campaigning as well. Good job, I can't vote but I am so glad to read all of the choices, Maita
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, may dugong Pinoy ako! Im away from home coz of my postgrad studies. Well, about my former boss... he is arrogant, with strong personality and Amerisian! Honestly, he has good records from previous government positions but I dont like the way he relates to the staff/employees! Even in the VP candidates, one of them was also my former boss! I like him coz he is more "makamasa" and he has a good rapport with the staff!
Wow emie great hub here eh, welcome home...
Sorry they are not running on the same party. I was a volunteer when I first worked with him - that was 17 years ago! I was really nationalistic (makabayan) that time and I gave up my good paying job abroad just to offer my free service to our country. No regrets and I could prouldy say that I did my little share to help the Philippine government after the US bases were pulled out in the country. All the best.
I'm going for Gordon - even if he doesn't win. I think Noynoy is too raw, even if I like his idealism. Eddie V. would have lent a strong moral center, but I have reservations about practicing ministers running for public office. The less said about Villar and Loren, the better. Erap's era is over. As for Gibo, honestly, he appears to be the most intelligent ones who make sense in the forums, plus he has a solid platform. Then he has considerable government experience that has a list of equally tangible accomplishments. I would have voted for him if not for his GMA connections. So...that leaves me Gordon.
Check it out...read my profile page to find out why? Congratulations!
I go for Gibo & BF, both of them do have a political will.
Gibo is brilliant, its unfair with him if we judge him based on political affiliation. He has an independent mind.
BF is a good executioner, He does his job well.
Good work again, Emie! This is certainly a great job going through this 2010 election reminder of who to vote. I'm one who doesn't make noise about my choice. You know just how it is around you. If you listen to all the candidates you might believe no one is really a great choice. Same old "trapos", climbing the edge of the pail and pulling each other down the bottom with the proverbial "talangka" (Crab) mentality. Who says we are poor? Look at how money talks by those posters, ads, etc.
The party lists are adding to the perceived problems come election. Too many lists of denied registrants in the official ballots? When will the Comelec ever learn to come up with clean election as they loudly profess? Despite all these I'll go out and vote. God bless the Philippines!
Woah, Emie. I had no idea your Presidential Elections is so big and competitive! I chose Gibo Teodoro because he seems to be the smartest and perhaps the most competent. But my opinion of course doesn't matter! I can tell that you knew most of this info off the top of your head! May the best candidate win! Salamat ;)
Dohn
thanks for your message
I will vote for Noynoy....Wish u all the Luck,.
Will show this to my dad. Noynoy is leading in the survey you posted. Thanks for this - informative update from the Philippines.
Good luck to all of them. I wish the best for the Philippines. I have always liked them having worked with quite a few.
Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap. Masarap pakinggan pero di maktotohanan. Lahat ng politiko mayayaman, mga mahihirap niloloko lang at ginagamit. Buti pa magsikap na lang para umunlad.
I had the opportunity to visit ur country in October. I went to Makati City, Manila, and Boracay. Its GREAT! Good Luck to all of u and ur country...
i vote for villar.coz he is deserving 2 bcome a president; hopefully u win
anyone but not Villar....
tnx for your website where i can express what i want to say to the fiipino. let us choose a candidate who is not the same as those who violates the rule air time and expenses for ads. if they violates the rule of comelec how can they obey the rule for the nation and for the people? they will become the leaders of violators.
i just recently made a hub about this, too. didnt have the idea that there are already similar hubs. but anyway, it is intended for pinoys to see the credentials and choose the best.
gibo is definitely unequaled for his brains and kisig. but i still have my doubts on him.
i am not a fan of villar.
let us go for dick gordon everytime you see and hear in any presidential forum and debates he has always concrete answers not like the other presidential candidates. He can deliver.
noynoy is the best candidates of pres. kaya vote na
Teodoro is the best of all of the candidates. He is the man that the country needs.
i voted late corazon aquino, then i never regret, i choose aquino again,
maging filipino tayo lahat, iboto ang mga unknown para nman sumigla ang bansa.wala english dyan kung talagang pinoy tayo.
noynoy or gibo....thats it
i go for Gibo
I AM STRONGLY BEHIND THE CANDIDACY OF GILBERT TEODORO
....TROPANG "GIBO" SA SAN JOSE....
MR.DANTE P.
I heard rumors that Manny Pacquiao was going to run for president one day. I think that would be kind of neat.
thanks for the sharingg..
Good luck with your elections. I will be watching closely from Australia as many of us will. :)
one thing I worry about this election is the possibility of failure in automation.
I go for Gibo. I also admire Gordon. They both can be a good prez. And for VP..? Hmm.. BF may not be eloquent speaker, natural na natural but I believe he can also be an effective Vice Prez. Hmmm sana ang choice ko 'yun din ang choice ng Lord. A bible proverb sez "The horse is prepared for the battle, but deliverance is of the Lord." Kung me plano ang mga tao, meron din ang God, right? Kung nakikita ng mga tao ang severe corruption sa ating bayan, can not God? Whoever wins..His will be done.
I have not chosen a candidate yet, there are pros and cons in every candidate. I like candidates like Gordon and Gibo because the are men of action who "act rather then say",
I have YET to see if Noynoy has what it takes to take on the position of president ...............
go gibo... isulong mo nlng ako :)
Vote Bro. Eddie C. Villanueva for President.
Economist, Evangelist, Educator, Servant-Leader.
PARA SA ANIM NA TAON NA WALANG KORAPSYON
ANG BAGONG PILIPINAS AY BABANGON!!!
i do believe that NOYNOY AQUINO has the abilities and capabilities to be our next president.... Noynoy is not just only intelligent but he is known for his pure and good heart... i Go for Noynoy......
thanks... lets pray for the honest and peaceful election :)
Blessings
After months of listening for the best possible presidential candidate, I believe Gibo is it.
I think he would be the best person to represent the Philippines to the world, based on his academic background and the results he has produced over the years.
Noynoy is a good decent person, I personally know him. He was my neighbor at Times Street in the 80's. He went out of his way for others.
I go for Gibo!
i understand gibo and gordon good credentials from "BUT" they're still connected with Gloria so ........Noynoy is an average candidate but my PUSO .........sa pag babago pasok para sa bagong simula ng PILIPINAS [ with my honest opinion Philippines tried twice to have famous brainy president like Marcos and Gloria but Where is the PHILIPPINES NOW in Asia ? hmmmmm I think just simple logic this time we need a honest government .........
G1bo is the best choice! We can be proud of our president especially to all world leaders. :)
I read all your comments regarding with our presidential election. I can always says as from my childhood... I'll never experience that we have a clean and fair election, it's always end into cheating and manipulation into COMELEC...
COMELEC, a Commission who handled our elections that always have a COMMISSION on every candidates at any level of politics...
Gordon - His a good Leader... but it's not his time to run for President...
GIBO - a duplicate of Gloria Arroyo...
Eddie V. - A good moral, Spiritual leader but not a Nation Leader...
NoyNoy - A son of Former Senator Aquino who leads a Uprising on his Time... a Mentor of NPA's...
JAMBY - A nuisance candidate... no exact " Plata-forma de Gobyerno"
JC D. R. - Another Nuisance...
Nicky Perlas - A Man with experience on Environment... another Nuisance...
Manny V. - A Good Leader on Business Management - I have doubts on Leading a Country...
ERAP - Another story of the PAST...
All Senior Senator was not run again for Senator... a dummy of their own are their sons and daughter... but Presidentiables are promising to them a position on the government...
What is Government... The REAL MEANING of this question never practice on our Country... Why... Because of Dynasty's, Allies, and most of all... UTANG NA LOOB... yan ang pinakamasakit na katotohanan sa Bansa natin...
Ang pagpasa ng katungkulan sa mataas na posisyon ay katulad ng Krimen... Pagpasa ng KASALANAN...
I like Gordon... but not now... Because his opponents are knows how to handle the members of comelec...
He will be surely defeat like a child...
SAYANG... but I still go for him...
One of the most informitive hubs i've seen ! I'm not Filipino myself but my wife's family is and I say anyone but ERAP. Action stars have no place in poilitics, especially ones kicked out for corruption. Out with the Old I see a few front runners in 'Gibo' and 'NoyNoy' just from the popular reaction. Wish I knew a bit more Tagalog so I could understand their points better but it seems like a well-rounded group of candidates.
My bets are doing good as for this moment as the partial returns was counted. Hopefully tomorrow they will be announced officially.
Ahmm in the presidential candidates i choose Aquino to lead the philippines...
Very informative and concrete information, I think you should publish some of it on wikipedia.
What'z gonna be idea?

A timely and relevant hub. The election fever is crazy and I'm certain we ain't seen nothing yet! What can I say, our love for elections rivals that of what we feel toward Christmas - there's definitely the fiesta atmosphere and money that keeps rolling out and in (minus the general kindness toward men, of course! haha)
