The Single’s Diary: How to Have Fun during Valentine’s Day
68Single? Unattached during Valentine’s Day?
Every time Valentine’s Day comes around, I always see single or unattached people with long, gloomy faces. They rue the fact that they are single or they don’t have anybody special to celebrate Valentine’s Day with. Here, we call these people SMVs or “Samahan ng Mga Malalamig ang Valentine’s” or the Association of (Unattached) People with a cold Valentine’s Day. Or, if they have been single and unattached all their lives (so far), they are the NBSBs (No Boyfriend Since Birth) or the NGSBs (No Girlfriend Since Birth).
These are actually meant to be jokes but for those who are part of the SMVs or those who are NBSBs or NGSBs, this part of the year drives them crazy because it drives home the point that, well, they are single and unattached and has nobody special to spend with during this ‘love’ season.
But hey, no need to fret. Even if you’re single and unattached, you don’t need to spend Valentine’s Day moping around like it’s the end of your world. You can still have fun during Valentine’s Day. In fact, you can have fun, Valentine’s or no Valentine’s Day, period. And here are just some ways to have fun before, during and even after Valentine’s Day:

Indulge Yourself This Valentine's Day
Being Single Doesn't Have to Mean That You're Lonely
Go Out and Have a Party….with your single and unattached friends. Make a date with your friends (who are also part of the SMV), reserve your place in the restaurant of your choice and just go out, eat and have fun. Go bowling with them or play some pool or go to the bar to have a drink or two. Sure, you’ll be surrounded by couples who are holding hands or looking deeply into each other’s eyes, but hey, you’re with your friends and you’re still having fun. And who knows? You might get to meet another unattached person who’s also out with his or her friends during this day and you two might just really hit it off.
Go to the Spa and Get a Massage…or go to a salon and get a foot spa or a manicure / pedicure or a hair make-over. Relax and treat yourself. Go alone, get a friend to go with you or better yet, catch some bonding time with your parent or your siblings. This may take just an hour or two but then again, its quality time that matters. Plus you’ll come out feeling like a princess (or a prince), with all the pressures released from your body. Not bad huh?
Go Buy Something for Yourself…Have you always wanted to have something that you have not really acquired for yourself yet? Maybe you want to have that heavenly perfume or that delicious chocolate or that gold watch or those fabulous earrings? Now’s the time to splurge (just a little bit, mind you, don’t go overboard please) and buy yourself something that you’ve always wanted. This will make you feel really good.
Go Buy Something for Other People…When my friends and I were still in college, all of us were single for a certain point in time. What my male friend would do during Valentine’s Day? Buy and give all of us (his female friends) a single rose. Nothing romantic, right? But we were really appreciative of what he gave us as it shows that he was also thinking of us. So, if you’re thinking what you will do this Valentine’s Day, why not buy something simple and give to your close friends or to your family members? Valentine’s Day is not just for couples, but for people who want to show their love for one another, platonic or otherwise.
Go…and work! Hwat!!!!!!!! LOL, I’m not kidding. For us, Accountants, February 14 is right smack in the middle of our tax busy season. And believe me, we all spend February 14 in the office, working our butts off, even those with boyfriends or girlfriends or husbands or wives. Besides, why would you want to go out, brave the traffic, and eat dinner in a crowded restaurant during Valentine’s Day (I’m not sour graping, believe me, I’m not)? Better wait until the first week-end after this day when you can have your fun and at a longer period, too.
Go…home and rest. Borrow your favorite movie from your video store and go home and watch it. Cook yourself a delicious dinner, then relax after eating it while sipping some wine and listening to some cool music. Yeah, yeah, might sound pathetic. Who says? This is what we call “quality time” for yourself and after a long day’s work (not to mention spending the day trying not to envy your office mates who received roses or flowers or who are going out on their dates), you really need this time for yourself.
Lastly, go and love yourself this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy your life as a single, unattached person who has no care in the world. Sit back and relax. Don't feel sorry for yourself and try not to pressure yourself into getting a partner just for the sake of having one during Valentine’s Day. Believe me, time will come when you will meet a special someone that you will be more than happy to spend this special day with. Until such time, spend this day any way you want it and think what a great life you have. Happy Valentine’s Day!

I'm single and how I enjoyed and related my upcoming Valentine's Day celebration with your thoughts.
Nice ideas again. Congratulations!
oh emie, I definitely do three of the things you have suggested, you bet, its okay for me, I have my children to think about too, hugs, Maita
I've had my share my dates before emie, but since I am single now..I have accepted it and am doing fine. The most important advice of all is to love oneself..if you do, you will be happy with or without a date. By the way, I remember I take this day to have a date with God. You know just to thank Him how much he has blessed me. And you see it makes my day so blessed already. Now being single, I should write about it huh? Hohoho Thanks for this beautiful hub of ideas for all the single ladies.
Worse than not having anyone to celebrate Valentine's Day with is that your boyfriend claims he forgot it was Valentine's Day! BTW - some great suggestions for the singles!
Thank you so much for sharing this, I actually follow some of the tips. Life is too short to be miserable! I am single and very proud of it, I embrace everyday of my life as if it were my last.
very good tips for those who feel single..
Doesn't bother me being single on Valentines as I kinda love myself, well I loves lil Emi as well ; )
single people have more fun options then married people, it seems. Nice hub Emie. I hope you have a happy V-day. :)
I so agree with your advice. Great tips! :)
I celebrate Valentine's Day the whole month of February by buying myself chocolates, and that is enough for me :).
Thank you Emie. This makes me feel a little bit better. What a lovely suggestion, to go and buy something for someone else!
Now, that makes a big difference... it could be the start of something really hot :)
That is a very kind and thoughful hub. Thank you
I'm kind of a grouch when it comes to Valentine's Day :( I've had my share of bad experiences with that particular day, as I broke up with my girlfriend for most of the day until we were able to quell the dispute--until the following day). I think I'm cursed! I hope this Valentine's Day will be better :D
Thanks Emie, for writing and sharing this one (good tips). For what it's worth, I celebrate by buying flowers for my sisters and mom :)
I like your options... except for going to work LOL
It is true that the most important thing is to love yourself and have fun, enjoy being single and taking advantage of it.
I never imagined all the stress Valentine's day could have on single people. I have been in a relationship ever since I can remember so I've never had that problem. Mind you, as you put it here, it doesn't need to be a problem :)
